1 Understand the 12 meridians of acupuncture. Many acupuncture points are available along these meridians. The meridians are found along the heart, lung, pericardium, small intestine, large intestine, kidney, liver, bladder, gall bladder, stomach, spleen and triple warmer.

2 Know the acupuncture principles. This method believes that pain and illness results from an obstruction in the body’s energy flow. By applying stimulus to predefined points, the body’s energy flow reinstated and wellness is obtained.

3 Study your acupuncture points. Read “Standard Meridian Points of Acupuncture: Charts” by Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It contains a list of all the body’s important acupuncture points and which points match which illnesses and conditions.

4 Locate your acupuncture points. Points are generally denoted by a little hole in the skin. Acupuncture points can also be detected by variations in temperature as compared to neighboring areas.
