5 Laptop purchase tips
-
Before you close in on what brand of
laptop you wish to purchase
, depending on your particular personal needs, there are many aspects to be considered.
First and foremost, it should be very portable and convenient to lug around. Getting a heavy notebook defeats the purpose of buying a mobile device. Monitor size too should be decent, not too large since the weight increases as the screen size does.
Hard disk capacity is something you should pay special attention too. Anything less than 20 GB is now obsolete and anything in the range of 40-60 GB is very decent. If you are the kind who will use the laptop as a repository of mps files, movie clips and multimedia programs, having a low-capacity hard disk will frustrate you.
Memory should be large enough to allow all your programs the space to multi-task. This too is a relative quantity and changes from user to user. Regular office-goers might only work on spreadsheets, word documents and the internet. In this case 128 MB RAM should be sufficient. But a photographer, who works with graphic intensive applications like Photoshop, etc will require atleast 256-512 MB RAM. Else, their system will be hanging up often. To prevent conflicts that arise form attaching external devices one by one, the laptop should have connectivity capability to an Internet service provider, to a corporate network, to a wireless network and to an online service.
Nowadays price is not so much of an issue as the price of a low-end laptop is almost on par with that of a high-end desktop. Purchase one, which has the potential to last for many years. Post-sales service is very important as it is generally believed that
laptops
are harder to service as opposed to desktop PC's.
