Adrenal Fatigue?

-
It manifests itself as depression, pains and tiredness, burn out, fibromyalgia, auto-immune diseases, low sex drive, insomnia, hair loss, and many other problems making daily life a problem. Adrenal fatigue will finally harm your immune system, and in turn your health. When suffering from this problem, you are always on the edge.

Our adrenal glands secrete cortisol and adrenalin, the hormones associated with the fight or flight response.

Many events occur in our lives that act as a major stressor. It could be an upcoming business presentation or a traffic jam or your ked refusing to obey you. You become frenzied and remain there. This causes you to over-react to things and thus leading to more trouble for yourself since others also react similarly. You may know people "addicted to adrenalin," those hard-driving Type A people who are forever angry and always in hurry. On the other end, there is Type D, those who have seen it all and reached the other side. They are cynical, bitter and depressed. This is because depression is known as "anger without enthusiasm."

This happens because your body goes into basic survival mode that does in a single moment. Your heart rate and blood pressure goes up, your body uses the stored energy reserves, emits chemicals, and makes you highly alert. This is acceptable when you are caught in a dangerous situation. But when it becomes regular, it becomes very tough for your body and exacts a price. How?

Our reptilian brain - the one with the basic instincts for survival has the highest effect on us, and it doesn't actually think. It is unable to rate "crises" on a scale of 1-10. It also mixes up a thought or memory with "now". You can increase your blood pressure by bringing up annoying memories. Besides we all have varying "set points", thereby increasing the importance of EQ. Hence some of us have more violent reaction to stressors than others. Some may just yell at the kids, while others can just give them a stern look to drive home the point. We live a stress-filled life. Moreover our diet is poor, the best of our food isn't quite healthy any more, and we are addicted to the short-term "highs" of carbs and caffeine. So it makes you under-nourished, over-worked, snowed down under environmental toxins, unable to handle your emotions that in turn can destroy your immune system, and chained in a harmful feedback loop.

You are stressed, you react and carry out actions that worsen the situation, you secrete more cortisol, which at higher levels destroys muscle and bone, impedes healing, impairs digestion, over-takes other essential functions and biochemicals, necessary for your health, blocks your thinking, and ultimately the tired adrenals cannot secrete adequate DHEA and initiates various side-effects mentioned above. It can also lead to problems like chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, and premature menopause and depression.

The key to stop this problem is to take high-quality nutritional supplements like essential fatty acids from fish oil and general immune booster like Arbonne's DefenseBuilder, restricting toxins (are you aware that anything applied on your skin enters your bloodstream, so be careful of the cosmetics that you apply generously) and develop high emotional intelligence. If you can monitor the emotional reaction that stimulates the cortisol, all will be well. But you need to undo the damage already done, hence the nutriceuticals. Sleep and non-addictive exercise as well, but many with adrenal fatigue fail to get a good sleep. Most principles of Emotional Intelligence are similar to those found in Buddhist scriptures. We are aware of the results obtained by changing brain waves, etc. They aim to avoid suffering, which is the basis of adrenal fatigue: suffering.

Marcy Holmes, Women's Health NP who writes on says: "It's important to emphasize the role of emotional factors. Guilt, pain from the past hurts, self-destructive habits, unresolved relationship problems - your past and present emotional experience may serve as an ever-present stressor." This is the normal medical model of pathology that consists of traditional therapy, talking, and revisiting the past. Coaching and Emotional Intelligence deal with the now and the future, and small, helpful things you can use. Some people require the dredging work of therapy but many others simply need to know how to switch over to a new emotional lifestyle. This is the basis of EQ. E.g. talking about anger does not sole the problem, it creates more anger. It's learning how to cope with the anger in the initial stage (as anger kills) is EQ. Our emotions impact our immune system, and subsequently our health. But in case of serious problems, talk to your personal healthcare professional who is capable of giving medical advice.
