Overview
The Akita are natives of the Akita region in Japan, and is over 3000 years old. The Akita has become favorite of the Japanese people for a long time. Akitas are regarded as the national dogs of Japan where they are chosen as a Natural Monument. This breed is excellent as guard dogs, fighting dogs and hunters - and also for carrying out army and guard work. The Akita is an excellent hunting dog, and can hunt in deep snow.
Temperament
This breed needs plenty of human attention. The Akita is a highly loyal dog - but sometimes they can be suspicious of strangers. Akitas are intelligent dogs and are quite fearless. This breed will protect its family and territory aggressively - and they may be very violent towards other animals. These dogs are very effective as guard dogs, but owners should know that they do not bark a lot. As the Akitas enjoy human company, they will not survive in a lonely environment. It is better that prospective owners have some experience in dog ownership since this breed may be aggressive toward other dogs. The Akita is quite responsive, very noble and very brave dog.
Care
Akitas need a substantial quantity of grooming to retain their coats in a proper condition. Brush their hair with a hair brush daily. Bathe them with a mild shampoo, but only when actually needed. Harsh shampoo can strip natural oils from their coats.
Training
Akitas should be trained thoroughly in training sessions. It is important for these dogs to be exposed to adequate socialization and obedience training. It is equally essential the those who own these dogs show their mastery or else these dogs will attempt to gain upper hand. Don’t deal with the Akita in a high-handed fashion. Instead a patient and kind approach with steadiness
will work. You can housetrain Akitas quite easily.
Health issues
The Akita are prone to conditions like hip dysphasia, thyroid autoimmune thyroiditis. They also suffer immune diseases like VKH and Pemphigus, and sometimes skin problems like SA and eyes patella.
