All About Dogs Nails
Cutting a dog's nails
is an activity each dog owner should do frequently, except your dog gets sufficient exercise on solid surfaces. The dog's nails are practical and assist in running, turning and digging and if the dewclaws are present are also effective.
Dog toenails receive nourishment from blood supply. The nails make the foot stable, provides grip for running and twisting and help in digging. The dewclaws (the additional knuckle and claw on the part of the leg over the foot just like the thumb) are beneficial for turning and for grabbing the prey or bones at the time of eating. However the dewclaws may not be present and are usually removed by surgery after birth.
Considerations
Pet dogs do not get adequate exercise to get short nails. Hence dog owners must cut their dog's nails after 3-4 weeks. The simplest way to get the dog accustomed to the nail trimming is to do it right from when it was a puppy. Begin with the feet, flattering and compensating the pup for putting up with it. Use good, pointed clippers to trim the pointed or arced part of the toenail. Trimming the nails frequently will keep them short and healthy. It is quite cheap to ask your vet or groomer to cut the nails, but it is easier for the dog if you do it at home.
Expert Advice
Many experts recommend utilizing a Dremel-kind implement on dog's nails as it creates the best look. Show dog owners use it to trim their dog's nails, and it is quite simple. Moreover a Dremel will not scratch or create any unease to the dog. Pet stores stock electric nail implements, just like the Dremel but meant particularly for dogs' nails.
Precaution
Long nails are dangerous to the dog. They can bend below the dog’s foot and cause unease and injury the foot pad. The dog can have problem walking normally, thereby pressurizing the joints. Large dogs can require up to 18 months for total bone growth, and if their nails grow very long, it can disturb joint growth and lead to permanent bone aberrations. Also long nails can spoil hardwood or vinyl flooring in bigger or heavier dogs.
Prevention/Resolution
Examine your dog's nails regularly, particularly if he wobbles. At times the nail will break along the length; this is quite possible if nails are allowed to grow very long. It will cause him pain and infection in the nail bed. Infections within the nail can cause bone infections, which are problematic and costly to cure. Besides examine the nails for peeling of the exterior or any type of irregular look. It may represent a fungal infection known as onychomycosis, which requires your vet’s attention.
