The name ‘
Avocado
’ is derived from the Aztec word ‘ahuacatl’. They are also known as the ‘Alligator Pear’ due to their shape and leathery skin. Avocados are the fruits of the tree known as the Persea Americana that is tall and evergreen. There are various types of avocado and they normally fall into 3 major categories: the West Indian, the Guatemalean and the Mexican, each having its unique size and flavour.
The avocado is a very nutrient-dense fruit. Its flesh is an excellent source of vitamin E and potassium. Its protein content is the highest amongst all the fruits. It only starts ripening when plucked from the tree.
Avocado contains a monosaturated fat
called oleic acid that is considered to reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels and increase the good HDL cholesterol. It also offers protection against breast cancer. Avocados have been shown to prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke due to presence of very high amounts of the mineral potassium. The high concentration of carotenoids and tocopherols in avocados has been proved to protect against prostrate cancer.
Warning: People with latex allergies may also be allergic to avocados due to presence of an enzyme known as chitinases and are treated by a gas called ethylene to carry out ripening.
