Benefits of Sarvangasana or the Shoulder Stand

Sarvanga means "all-limbs" or "full-body posture". It is so called, as its benefit is applicable for whole body.

· The most vital advantage of Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) is that the thyroid gland starts working at highest efficiency. The thyroid gland is primarily responsible for proper weight and youthful looks.

· Sarvangasana also controls the pituitary and sex glands.

· The Shoulder Stand invigorates the nerves, cleanses the blood and improves circulation.

Also, it makes the lower organs strongers and keeps them firmly in place.

· Sarvangasana stretches all the muscles of the neck very thoroughly.

· The Shoulder Stand is quite useful to people suffering from poor constipation, indigestion, blood circulation, asthma and low fertility.

· Sarvangasana is especially meant for post-natal mothers and women suffering from painful menstruation, other women’s problems, and seminal weakness.

Many regard the Shoulder Stand as the most essential Yoga posture. Actually, if you have limited time to exercise, you are better off doing more of Sarvangasana.

If performed in the mornings the Shoulder Stand can relieve tiredness caused by too much or too little sleep. If done in the evenings Sarvangasana leads to deep, restful sleep. The Shoulder Stand also makes your back stronger and helps eliminate lower backaches.

The enhanced blood flow to the head and upper body, by practice of the Shoulder Stand, leads to cure of various disorders like headaches, nasal congestion and sore throats. The body’s entire endocrine, digestive, nervous, and venous systems are stimulated in ways no other kind of diet or traditional exercise does.

As the body is turned upside down, a good supply of oxygenated blood, goes to the organs and glands in the upper body – the brain, thyroid and pituitary, and heart- thereby rejuvenating them. Pressure is reduced from the lower body, thus easing aches and/or puffiness of legs and feet. The Shoulder Stand is also beneficial organs, leading to better digestion and eliminating gas /constipation. Frequent practice of Sarvangasana excites your mind and soothes your entire nervous system.
