Boating Shoes Basics

Boat shoes are quite well known. They are also referred to as deck shoes or topsiders. The main source of their design came from Native Americans, who wore leather moccasins that were waterproof, had low profile and with laces on the sides for comfort fitting. Today these shoes are excellent while boating. These shoes saved you from slipping on the wet boat deck. The leather upper portion was applied with oils to prevent the water from entering in. The soles used a non-skidding rubber. The low profile of the shoe made it simple slip it on and off as a slipper or loafer. Consequently getting on and off the boat became easy.

Ultimately boat shoes became trendy and elegant to wear away from the yacht deck. They entered into fashion world as a shoe in between formal and casual shoes. Using the word “Boat” made the shoes very athletic and an elegant must-have for any wardrobe. Many wear boat shoes without socks, and few use sock pads within to provide additional comfort to the bare feet. You can wear these shoes with socks but the trendiest and fashionable thing to do is not to use socks.

It is difficult to decide when to wear boat shoes and when to wear loafers. According to style experts, loafers should be used with the business casual outfits like jeans and a button down shirt. Boat shoes are more for sporty look. You can combine them with golf shoes, shorts, and polo shirts or any dressier sports wear. But do not use them in the winter.

As they were originally designed for wet ship decks, they are quite hardy. But even with their toughness, they require some maintenance. To increase the looks and life of your shoes apply oil frequently to the leather. The oil retains the original property of the shoes to resist moisture. Remove the insoles often and spray them with a shoe cleaner to prevent the spread of fungus. If the sole starts eroding, get it repaired as quickly as you can. This will protect you from slipping on the wet deck of the ship.

Before purchasing boat shoes, take some points into account. Choose a solid sole that is durable to prevent slipping. The slipping does not occur only on the deck of the ship, but also in the daily life. They should fit your foot properly and offer comfort but it is advisable for you to check them out before purchasing them. You will not know if the shoe will feel or fit properly before trying it on.

But it is important to remember that good quality shoes will be quite expensive. However if you are ready to pay more, they will last for a long time without any major damages. Go for the reputed brand names to get the quality shoes. All the companies do not call them boat shoes. They are also called boat shoes, topsiders, or even deck shoes.

Boat shoes make excellent choice not only for the deck of the boat but also to enjoy the sporty casual look. But try on the new boat shoes before purchasing so that you will enjoy them for a long time.
