Chinese Food

After pizza, Chinese food is the most favored food amongst the people around the world. It has found many takers around the world. But the question is: Is it harmful for you?

Chinese food is preferred by both the native Chinese as well as the Americans. Their spicy recipes and original cuisine caters to people of practically any taste and offers unlimited prospects. But at times, Chinese food can actually be unhealthy meal. However for the ardent Chinese food lovers interested in healthier options, you can get healthier choices that retain the original taste but have fewer saturated fats and simple carbohydrates.

To get the maximum nutritional benefit from the Chinese food, select the appropriate combination of foods. Go for foods rich in protein like chicken or beef recipes with lots of veggies to make some healthier choices. Instead of fried dishes like sweet and sour or sesame chicken, select a sautéed substitute like cashew chicken or beef and broccoli. These recipes give nutritional value that those other traditional recipes like lo mein can’t. Lo mein is full of bad fats and carbohydrates because it contains plenty of noodles and is stir fried in oil. Ensure the Chinese restaurant where you eat, does not use MSG in its dishes. The nutritional value of MSG has been debatable.

Don’t choose the fried egg roll and wontons as healthy side dishes; rather select a cup of soup. Stay away from fried rice, as it provides unusually large quantities of calories and has very high cholesterol levels. If available, substitute brown rice for fried or white rice. On the day you eat Chinese food, if possible restrict your consumption of foods heavy in sodium. Many Chinese meals are rich in sodium due to presence of soy sauce and other additives. Avoid adding unnecessary salt to your dishes. Moreover, if you are choosing a food with peanuts, restrict their intake. Peanuts are quite healthy due to presence of many good fats and nutrients. But excess consumption can make the healthy dish unhealthy in a short time.

Selecting between a low-end and high-end Chinese restaurant can also affect the nutritional value of the food served. Normally, many high end Chinese food restaurants offer a special menu with healthy choices along with the list of their nutritional content.

If in doubt, ask your server or the manager of the Chinese restaurant about the nutritional value of the food. Most of the times, they are happy and ready to give you information about their recipes and are generally in the know about their cuisine. It has become mandatory for the restaurants to list the nutritional contents on site. This will help you in choosing the healthiest Chinese takeout options.
