Cleaning Cubic Zirconia

The elementary principle of jewelry care is to use all lotions, make-up, hair spray, etc. before wearing the jewelry. Pearls are generally more affected by the solvents in hair sprays. But many people do not remove rings and some do only rarely. When jewelry undergoes cleaning, usually a ring that is never removed from the finger and cleaned by the wearer requires maximum repairs.

Dirt penetrates the metal settings and the stones, resulting in rough wear and finally a loose stone. Regular erosion on the external of stone settings can cause loose stones. Periodic home cleaning and frequent inspection of jewelry will save you from many stone losses, leading to repairing or tightening before any damage occurs.

Hand lotions and soap film can be tough to remove. For CZ stones, a clean stone is necessary to get the "sparkling diamond" appearance. A small quantity of lotion at the base of the stone will make it lose much of its sheen. Luckily, CZ's are quite hard and tough. So you can clean them more vigorously than other stones like opal or pearls.

First remove the ring from your finger to begin cleaning. With a soft toothbrush and a warm to hot solution of a dishwashing detergent, brush as thoroughly as you can to eliminate the dirt and the lotion. Rinse properly in warm water. Pat dry and see if it is clean enough. If cleaning is not enough, immerse the ring in hot tap water mixed with nearly 1/3 detergent in 2/3 water. Now brush the ring again.

The brush and the toothpick will not harm the stone. But keep it away from rough cleansers. Many of them will not harm a CZ but will make the metal lose its sheen. A few may result in scratches on the softer gemstones. Avoid using toothpaste or equivalent chemicals. After a small home sized ultrasonic cleaner, the detergent method is ideal for home application.

For CZ a small sudsy ammonia can be added to increase the cleaning speed and effectiveness dramatically. Avoid using ammonia cleaners with silver, turquoise or pearls. Ammonia will result in spots on the silver. Make a strong solution of ammonia for cleaning, but keep the window open to let some air in.

Periodic cleaning allows you to understand your jewelry and detect damaged metal and loose stones before they fall off.

If you cannot remove the dirt, take it to the jewelry store for cleaning and inspection. Strong detergents in heated ultrasonic cleaners followed by high pressure steam cleaning will eliminate nearly all dirt. Soapsuds do need more time but eventually they come out.

CZ is quite tough and can even cut glass. Many faceted stones can easily cut glass. But the dust particles in the air have plenty of silica. Hand lotions deposit a film on jewelry, making it easier for the dust to settle. As time goes by, this rock dust erodes metal settings and few softer gemstones. Do not allow the lotion to touch the jewelry. This will allow jewelry to retain its sparkle and increase its lifespan.
