Creating Effects With Decoupage

Most professional crafters are already familiar and have enjoyed designing stunning cards, scrapbook pages and gifts with decoupage.

Decoupage is derived from the French word 'cut' and originated in the 18th century. In its initial years decoupage may have been regarded as a child craft because it involves cutting pieces paper and layering them one above other to create a 3D image.

Today decoupage has become increasingly sophisticated and quite often there are bigger decoupage images framed as pictures throughout homes. The effects decoupage gives can make it look complicated but it is actually quite simple.
When creating decoupage images for card or scrapbook projects, always get the right tools. It is recommended that you buy a pair of high quality curved scissors and while cutting, keep the curve away from your body.

Steady the hand holding the scissors if not opening or closing the blades to cut the paper. This will help you achieve better result if you just keep on moving the paper and directing it to the scissors instead of the other way around.

Use a scalpel or craft knife when cutting complex parts of decoupage or parts from within the image. If you are using a craft knife, place a cutting mat below before cutting.

After cutting the images, proceed further by creating layers one over the other. If you have some experience in creating decoupage images, use silicone gel to layer the images one above the other. However novices to decoupage will find foam pads very helpful.

Note that the foam pads should not be visible when the image has been stuck down. So keep them away from the edge of your cutting. Then just layer the images one above the other to get an excellent 3D look.

Decoupage sheets are easily available on the internet or in craft shops. Some of them will come with step by step instructions making it simpler for you to know exactly what and where to cut.

You could also try searching your own images on the internet and simply repeating the design at least 4 times then printing on high quality inkjet paper, you will need to be careful with copyright issues if you do decide to try this.

You can also buy decoupage disks or CDs consisting of ready images that you simply print, cut and stick them together.

Decoupage is increasingly becoming popular amongst crafters. For newcomers, it is simple yet very effective for card projects, making them look completely professional.
