Decorating the Home Window

Decorating the window is quite tricky. The trick is to fit the decorating themes of a particular room with the suitable window treatment. The other factors are color, barricading properties, light control and privacy. However window treatments include almost any window covering: blinds, shades, shutters and drapes.

Getting the right blinds and shades is slightly more complicated than these options. E.g. there are motorized blinds, cordless, valance options, wand control etc. But here we will consider mostly the major themes as described above. After selecting the right blind, shade, shutter or drape, you can then add any of the luxurious options from the manufacturer.

Here are the main choices. In the window blinds section there are mini blinds, plantation shutters, vertical blinds, wood and faux wood blinds and lastly, panel track blinds. For the window shades category there are roller shades, sheer shades, pleated shades, woven wood shades (or bamboo shades), roman shades, cellular shades and solar shades (or solar screens). Also there are drapes. This category can be large according to how you categorize them. Here we divide them as custom and pre-made. Custom drapes are customized drapes cut to the correct size of your window and having a built in 2 to 1 fullness. They are of superior quality and use a variety fabrics from silk to cotton. Made-to-order drapes are usually cheaper and sold at many major retailers.

For kitchens, faux wood shutters and faux wood blinds are the best. They suit well with wood cabinets and can resist the normal hot and damp environments of kitchens. This also holds for bathrooms. But, other options for bathrooms are pleated shades, which are the non-insulating kind of cellular shades. The good thing about pleated shades is they match well with the top down/bottom up feature giving excellent privacy. Cheaper options for these types of rooms are mini blinds, woven woods or roman shades. Mini blinds are better for rooms having a more modern décor while wood finishes are excellent  for wood-type decors. A simple rule of thumb is to suit your window treatments with the dominant color and materials of the room: wood with wood, fabric with fabric, metal with metal and all in matching colors.

For living rooms and family rooms, you can choose anything. For big windows, like sliding doors, vertical blinds are the best but you can also choose panel track blinds. Also

vertical blinds are available in various materials like faux wood, fabric, cellular and aluminum. Plantation shutters, though costly are timeless choices for window covering. They can be used in any house except in modern and contemporary houses, where aluminum mini blinds or vertical blinds are better.

For bedrooms, privacy and light control should be given the priority. So, better options are roller shades, cellular or pleated shades with a blackout liner, or woven woods and roman shades, also with a liner. Your choice will be decided by the general décor of your room. For more insulating benefits from shades, choose the cellular option.

For dining rooms, go for drapes or roman or woven wood shades. If you prefer the roman shades, choose the pleated or tear-drop ones for a more luxurious decor.

For rooms with views and plenty of sunlight, choose solar shades. They are available in different levels of opacity, i.e. amount of light blocked. The good thing about solar screens is you can get a view out of your windows without heating up the room and more amount of privacy from the road view.
