Developing A Low Maintenance Garden

Many people think having a garden full of beautiful plants and flowers is lot of additional work and attention. But it is not true. Follow these tips to create a garden of your dreams but without having to spend any extra time and effort.

Beds And Borders
Attractive, properly-filled beds and borders make garden attractive but they need a lot of time. To reduce your workload select low-maintenance plants and mulch them with either decorative chipped bark, or with chemical controls to eliminate the weeds. Irrespective of the planting style you select, do not use plants that grow haphazardly, require constant trimming or pruning, and those with plenty of seeds that sprout in the unwanted places.

Foliage
Interesting foliage usually works as a background to flowers, but it can be also used independently. The various types of greens, purples, bronzes, silvers and striking variegations allow you to create interesting effects only with the foliage. Evergreens are better choice because they do not shed leaves like deciduous trees or wither away thus leaving behind remnants that should be removed like perennials. On the other hand, deciduous trees give some brilliant autumn effects that will make your garden look attractive when the numbers of flowers in your border are less.

Including Flowers
Though foliage may enhance the beauty of your garden, garden can be so called only when you include flowers. Most of them will grow well with hardly any tending. There are various types of flowering plants to select from. Traditional seasonal borders can be planted two times a year with bedding plants to benefit from spring and summer flower color. Though they are colorful, they need hard work and should not be considered if you are short of time. Instead opt for more permanent plants, as they are not time-consuming.

Annuals also involve less work as they can be sowed as they are. They are ideal for filling spaces with brilliant summer color. Sow them in late spring to enjoy their flowers in summer. Most of them will self-seed for a long time. Pot marigolds, nasturtiums, love-in-a-mist, and varieties of poppy like Californian and common field poppies, are excellent self-seeders. Just pluck up the seedlings that germinate in unwanted places. Remove the plants after they have completed flowering.

With variety of growth habits, sizes and flower shapes and colors, herbaceous perennials add an extra sparkle to the garden. Select the ones that you can plant and then leave alone for some years. They will bloom every year. Shrubs are ideal for borders. They will grow for years without any care but avoid the ones that grow quite rapidly like buddlejas and roses or those that grow to a great height and are unmanageable like lilacs. But many others can be easily maintained, thus letting you develop low maintenance border quickly. Potentillas and hardy fuchsias flower for some months though you may have to chop them in winter. You can also select mahonia and hebe.
