Food Guide Pyramid
We need various types of foods that contain different nutrients, necessary for our body to grow, retain its health, perform daily activities effortlessly and enhance our appearance. These nutrients include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, salts, and water. These nutrients are easily obtained by eating a balanced diet.
Food is the fuel used by our body for its daily activities. As the quantity of fuel goes on decreasing, our body emits signals to denote this reduction in its fuel supply. We experience these signals as hunger. After we eat, these nutrients are replenished and we can go about our daily tasks again. The amount of fuel we need is measured in calorie.
The quantity of food that each one needs varies from person to person. The different factors that determine the consumption of food are: age, sex, his/her volume, the type, level of exercise done and the climatic conditions prevalent in the area. Besides these, aging, pregnancy, sickness or development will also impact the amount of calories required to maintain adequate level of energy.
An effective diet plan takes into account the quantity of each nutrient needed by the person. It should consider the factors mentioned above to calculate the amount of nutrients required by each individual. Ideally, a balanced diet should consist of 50-55% carbohydrates, 25-30% fats and 15-20% proteins. Some foods are not necessarily more wholesome than the others. It is important you eat right amounts of food items of various categories, depending on your body structure and exercise level. This is the essence of healthy diet.
Follow some simple general rules to keep your body and mind healthy. Ensure your food intake is properly balanced with the energy expenditure. The diet plan should include all the essential food items in the amounts recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. Your total fat consumption should not be more than 30% of the recommended limit. Decrease the total consumption of salt and alcohol beverages. Avoid drinking over 3 cups of coffee everyday. 55% of the total calories eaten should be obtained from carbohydrates like bread, rice, fruits, vegetables, pulse, pasta and potatoes.
Following the above advice meticulously is the key to good health.
