Garden to attract Humming birds

Humming birds are miniature birds which can flap their wings with such speeds that they can hang in mid air for a long time. During this time, they can suck the nectar out of the flowers with the help of their long beaks. These birds are so beautiful that you’d want them to visit your garden ever so often. However, its cruel on your part to cage them. On the other hand, if you can manage to provide shelter to them, they would probably start living in your yard. Here are a few tips to build a house for these humming birds.

The first thing on your list should be nectar-producing flowers. This is quite essential as without this there is no way a humming bird will get attracted. Also, it is preferred to go for flowers, which are orange, or a bright shade of red. Rose of Sharon bushes are one of the most preferred flowers. Others in the list would be rhododendrons, spring bloomers azaleas etc. The principle here is to plant such combination of flowers of which one or the other variety keeps blooming throughout the year thus providing sufficient nectar to the bird. Ruby throated humming birds are highly attracted to these flowers and can be seen hovering over them.

There are many flowers, which bloom mainly in the summers while others bloom in autumn. Thus, make sure you look up the list and choose flowers with bright colors. One thing, which may be overlooked, is an area for perching. Arrange for some branches in a space which is vertically enlarged. This will provide them the feeling of security. Don’t install birdbath for them, instead set up a small fountain, which produces some amount of mist. Humming birds prefer mists to bowl of water and will be attracted to the fountain more.

Lastly, in case you have trouble setting up all this by yourself, you can buy the same from your local retailer. Since humming birds are private creatures, it’d be better to set up these spaces far apart from each other. That will facilitate more number of birds visiting you yard.
