Goji Berry Benefits
 
 
 
Goji berry is the Chinese bright orange–red fruit of the woody and thorny shrub, Lycium babarum. In English, it is known as wolfberry. L. barbarum is one of the 90 varieties of the genus Boxthorn (Lycium in Latin) from the Solanaceae family. So it is closely related to tomato, potato, eggplant, chili pepper, tobacco, etc. Its origin can be traced back to the regions of southeast Europe and southwest Asia, but is today cultivated throughout the world. China is the world’s largest producer of Goji berry.

Goji berry is alternatively called as Chinese wolfberry, matrimony vine and Duke of Argyll’s tea tree. You can get it in herbal health care stores as the dried fruit and is labeled as Tibetan or Himalayan Goji berry. The majority of the commercially available Goji berry is cultivated in the Ningxia and Xinjiang regions of China.

In Asia, it is considered as one of the most nutrient dense health foods since times immemorial. It is widely claimed to confer various health benefits like: better eyesight, stronger immunity, liver protection, longer life etc. Scientific evidence has detected large amounts of micronutrients and phytochemicals in this fruit.

Goji berry is believed to possess healthy benefits due to occurrence of plenty of phytochemicals like polysaccharides, sterols and zeaxanthin and antioxidants like beta carotene, lutein, lycopene and vitamin C, along with plenty of minerals like calcium, potassium, iron, zinc and selenium.

Goji berry can be either consumed raw or brewed into a tea. Its taste resembles raisins, though less sweet but drier. Commercially, it is sold either as dried fruit or in powdered form. Chinese regularly use Goji berry is as a constituent in soups. They eat its leaves and young shoots like a leafy vegetable. There is even a Chinese wine produced using Goji berry.
