Grape Planting Tips

Grape planting really is highly vague, and if you are interested in taking up growing grapes as a business, is quite expensive. Prior to even planting grape vines you must prepare the area a year in advance.

The fields and area are dealt with nitrogen and other nutrients to make them ready for the plantation. In most of the cases, the soil quality is poor, so it must be prepared beforehand. In very rare instances, the soil tends to be good quality. Though this step is optional, your grapes will gain from it, especially if the soil quality is poor.

Before commencing with grape planting, you will need to fit trellis stake, and the most essential components of a trellis system. It comprises of stress ensuring support at the borders of each row, support post and the lower wire. Extra trellis wires and catch wires can be fixed after your grapes vines have grown. Many stress post will be really fixed in the ground below the soil and to dig them may need heavy machinery. Some draining system may also be needed to be installed, based on the quality of the soil.

While planting grapes, you have to give appropriate space to the rows and plants. The main reasons for doing this comprises of: required trellis system, climate, exposure and if mechanical or manual labor is involved. It makes sense to keep the row widths to accommodate the size of a small sprayer. Machine produced grapes will need bigger row widths, since machines should be able to go through and above the vines. For maximum sun exposure most vines will be planted on the trellis located in the north to south direction.

Another factor that will affect your design is if you intend to carry out all the work manually or if you want to do it with machines. Broader rows are required for machine production and hedging, since the machines should be able to go through the rows. For manual labor, the rows should be just wide enough to accommodate the little sprayer, or alternately you can go for a manual sprayer for narrower row widths.

After you have planted grapes, concentrate on setting up the vines and letting them to grow. It needs 2 years for grapes to be get grapes though only from the 3rd year can you actually get edible fruit. Always remember this point while considering the cost, since you can recover your money only from 3rd year.
