Healthy Types of Tea
 
 

Camellia sinensis is the family of plant from which all teas, except herbal teas, are obtained. Both tea and herbal teas can be prepared loose by utilizing a strainer or expedient tea bags, and drunk as tasty hot or iced drinks.

The three chief types of the camellia sinensis tea plant are: the India (Assam), the China and the hybrid. India tea has big leaves and thrives in lower heights, while China tea has small leaves and flourishes in higher heights. Hybrid tea blends amounts of both China and India teas. The four primary kinds of tea obtained from India, China and hybrid teas are oolong, green, black and white.

White tea is the most uncommon and least processed tea. It has a highly grassy taste occasionally. Tea processing normally comprises of oxidation, or fermentation. The oxidation takes place when enzymes present in the tea plant are damaged, shattered or crushed thus exposing the enzymes to air. White tea is totally not oxidized, but simply allowed to dry as it is. This air-drying method is known as withering.

White tea is named after its silver-colored dried buds having white, thread-like tumors. It has the smallest quantity of caffeine and the maximum quantity of antioxidants from the four chief varieties of tea. Silver Needle is a kind of white tea having a faintly sweet taste.

Black tea is the most widely consumed tea globally, but contains fewer antioxidants than other kinds of teas but highest amount of caffeine. Black tea is totally oxidized. The leaves are spun to crush the surface thus exposing the leaves to air. Once the leaves are totally oxidized they become totally black, giving it the name black tea. Keemun black tea is said to possess a chocolate-like taste. Darjeeling and Ceylon are other varieties of black tea.

Green tea is more related to white tea as compared to black tea since it is non-oxidized. But the disparity between white and green tea is that green tea utilizes rolled leaves instead of the buds. The grassy flavour of green tea is just like that of white tea and green tea has low level of caffeine and rich in antioxidants as against black tea. Jin Xian Te Jian and Hojicha are varieties of green tea.

Oolong tea is the toughest to process, since oolong leaves are just incompletely oxidized. You are not allowed to break or crush the leaves as it leads to total oxidation and hence to be just damaged slightly. This can be achieved by hurling the leaves in baskets, thereby exposing just the borders of the leaves to the air. Oolongs can be closer to black teas or green teas during the process of fermentation. Pouchong and Formosa are two varieties of oolong tea.

Decaffeinated black teas are used a lot in the West. The United States has authorized using both carbon dioxide and ethyl acetate while stripping caffeine from black tea. As per the American Medical Association (AMA) maximum of 7 cups of black tea per day is not a high amount of caffeine intake for most adults.

While herbal teas are not really obtained from the tea plant, they are very tasty. They can be prepared from various types of flowers and herbs. Herbal tea assortments like peppermint, peach, strawberry and lemongrass are widely used tea alternatives.
