House Painting Tips
Painting
is an excellent do-it-yourself project. Though anybody can apply paint on the wall, there is a predefined parameter that defines a good painting. Here we give you some tips on how to paint the interior of your house.
Things required:
Rollers, two sizes of brushes, a trim or cornering (sponge) brush, paint pan. plenty of rags for cleaning up and newspapers, drop clothes or plastic sheeting along with some rolls of masking tape, painter's coveralls, shoe slip-ons, and hairnets, most likely a few spare sets if the job lasts for some days and some screwdrivers for removing fixtures etc.
You may need some of these: Wall scrapers, putty and putty knives, caulking and caulking guns, wire brushes, extra pail and roller grid, painter's specialty paint pads, ladders, scaffolds, sandpaper, spackling compound and paint.
Preparation:
The 90% difference between the novices and pros lies in preparation. The secret of good painting is to spend some days prepping a room, which can be painted in a far shorter time. Do not ignore any place in the room, thinking that the paint will not reach there. Paint will reach areas that are out of your imagination, irrespective of the care you take. Try to spend at least 2 hours to cover the areas where you do not want to paint and the next 3 days after painting to remove the paint with a razor scraper.
Remove all the items in the room that are not fixed or bring them in the middle of the room and cover them with either newspapers or dropcloths or plastic sheeting and fasten with duct tape. Cover the floor with plastic sheeting if it is carpeted or you are lugging a ladder on it. Use newspapers to cover the windows. Fasten everything with a masking tape.
Dismantle metal and plastic fixtures from the room. Hanger hooks, doors, mirrors, light switch and plug socket faces, shelf brackets, thermostat controls etc. should be removed. Removing the items is much easier than keeping paint away from them. Mummifying small items in tape is enough to cover them. For bigger surfaces, covering can be done by the cloth, paper, or plastic and can be glued with the tape on the edges. Do not cover with just one layer, use many layers to prevent the ripping of the material and allowing the paint to seep through. The only exception is the hanging lamps or chandeliers in the room that are very difficult to remove and need heavy labor. You can simply cover them with a heavy-duty trash bag and fasten the duct-tape at the opening.
Once you have finished the above task, start cleaning the area where you’ll be painting and if possible, patch and prime it too. Clean it with soapy water and a sponge. Based on the type of walls, you may have to scrape off old paint and fill any holes and cracks. Ensure that the area you want to paint is clean and dry once you are through with the enhancements.
You should also take care to keep your walls clean when the paint is wet, otherwise you will find dirt being stuck to the wall. Keep some type of blockade to prevent the outside dust from settling on the wall, disallow the pets from coming near, use window screen to keep out insects and garbage and not using the room for smoking.
Use
excellent quality paints
that are only slightly expensive than the bargain paints. This will save you from having to paint your house each year. You will also save money and labor. Paint quality doesn’t depend on the brand as the varieties of paint available under each brand.
Painting can be drudgery, so having a partner to help you or an iPod or radio to entertain you, will help. Music allows you relax and concentrate. Take sufficient paint on your roller or brush and apply evenly and liberally. Though modern paints are not as harmful as the older ones, they can be injurious if inhaled in large amounts. Hence it is advisable to keep the windows open or fan on to allow proper ventilation in the room. Going out of the room being painted for some time after every couple of hours to breathe will help.
