How Do Solar Panels Work

Solar panels are rapidly gaining in popularity as a substitute for regular electricity production methods. Solar panels let us use the solar energy to produce power for any of our appliances. Here we take a look at the construction of solar panels and their workings.

Solar panel technology uses 2 kinds of solar heat collection: solar collectors and solar cells. As most of home and DIY solar panel projects use solar cells, we'll take a look at the solar cell technology. Solar cells are also called as photovoltaic cells. They constitute a photovoltaic panel, usually called as a solar panel. Photovoltaic means translating light into electricity. These photovoltaic cells consist of a semi-conductor, usually silicon. Silicon is used in the microprocessors of computers and is the most widely used semi-conductor, as it can transmit electricity. When light falls on these cells, they absorb the solar energy and a current is generated by the cell. When these cells are joined together into a solar panel, and their contacts kept outside the panel, we can access this electrical current.

After the solar panels are wired and are working properly, they have to be placed tactically, so that they receive the highest sunlight. For solar panels for home usage, the roof is the best option to keep the solar panels. It is crucial to choose the best angle and location so that these panels work most efficiently. Even if one of the cells does not receive the full sunlight, the effectiveness of the solar panel will be vastly reduced. Also, the angle of the panels should be changed throughout the year so that these panels are completely exposed to sun in different seasons. You ma or may not have to do this, based on your personal design.

Next, in order to use the energy in your home, you have to change the current from direct current (DC) to an alternating current (AC). For this, you have to use an inverter, to change this current into an AC current needed for your regular household equipments. Another useful step is to save this energy for the periods when the sunlight is absent or very dull. For this, use the deep-cycling batteries, which let you completely charge and recharge your batteries to use little amount of power for a long time.

When you observe solar panels, you will see there are many panels kept together. On close observation, you will see the individual solar cells that constitute each  solar panel. Also, watch the panels’ position. See how others have placed the panels to obtain highest exposure to the sun, in terms of the height, angle and location, in order to ensure the panels work most effectively.
