How to Get Rid of a Squirrel in Your House

This article tells you how to safely remove a squirrel that has taken up residence in your house without harming you or the squirrel.

Steps

1. First and foremost, don't be scared! A squirrel is as frightened of you as you are . The main aim of both you and the squirrel is the same: leave your house easily and as quickly as far as possible. Moreover a squirrel cannot become vicious, thereby eliminating the possibilities of meeting a vicious squirrel.

2. Find out the room in your house inhabited by the squirrel and remove either of your pets—take them outdoors or into another room quickly.

3. Tentatively working around the squirrel, open wide a window in that specific room (usually on the other part of the room).

4. Shut all other doors, drawers, etc., in that room, as much as you can, without approaching the squirrel. If there is no window in that room, go to the next step.

5. Go out of the room and make that room inaccessible to others in the house. If there is no door, stick all other doors that take to that room and/or fix a temporary board or door to the room; through which the squirrel cannot come out and cannot jump over. Here you are aiming to give the squirrel an easy exit, leaving it with just option - the window. In case there is no window in that room, give it an acces route to a room with an open window. It may need little work, by generally closing some doors and taking a logical route to the window room (with boards etc, if required), are effective.

6. Go out of the house for a couple of hours, along with your pet(s), if possible. As soon as the squirrel knows the house is empty, they will go out through the window.

7. On coming back, ensure you scan all rooms of the house where the squirrel had moved around before deciding it is out of your home.

Tips

· Squirrels don’t carry rabies. Hence, in case a squirrel bites you, take medical treatment, but don’t lose your sleep on suffering from rabies. But squirrels can and do carry fleas, so take precautinons to look for them after coming back to the house. They can also carry other diseases in their teeth due to foraging, so ensure you get a tetanus shot too.

· If the methods above are ineffective initially, exit the house for another couple of hours. They'll ultimately get the message.

· Once the squirrel has exited, clean all surfaces where you think the squirrel was on or near, etc properly.

· Bin any food-stuffs that you think the squirrel may have touched.

Warnings

· Don’t try to pet the squirrel or get close to it by any method. If threatened, the squirrel can attack and bite, in defense.

· Quickly shift all pets from the area where the squirrel is.
