How to Give a Moxa Treatment
Introduction
Moxa
or 'moxibustion' is derived from the Japanese word "Moe Kusa" which means "burning herb". It comes from the herbal plant called mugwort. Traditional Chinese medicine uses moxa to treat and avert pain, unease and disease by removing stagnancy and cold, thereby warming the meridians, making the blood stronger and inspiring the flow of Qi. There are some different means by which Moxa can be used, but here we see how to use the Moxa stick. Usually, the moxa stick is used on acupuncture points or on certain parts of the body as per the condition. Moxa has highly potent Qi tonifying properties and must be used rarely, only for short period, and with care.
Instructions
Things Needed
* A moxa stick (or roll)
* A match or lighter
* A small ceramic or glass dish to hold any wayward ash.
* A towel to keep below the area under treatment.
* A glass of water
Steps
1 Start by getting a moxa stick. It is basically loose 'moxa-wool' packed tightly reeled in a cigar-like manner with a paper covering. (Moxibustion supplies are available at ebay.com).
2 Uncover any clothes from the area to be treated. Keep a towel below the part you want to treat to capture any falling ash.
3 Light one end of the moxa stick with a match or lighter. Hold the stick in contact with the heat source till it starts smoking and smoldering little. Lightly blow out the stick in the ceramic or glass dish. (Check the heat of the stick by keeping it a little distance over
the back of your hand. If you experience a nice warmth the stick has been properly heated). Now wipe out the match or lighter.
4 Hold the stick about 2-3 cm over any part (or parallel acupuncture point) where you experience pain, aches, cramps or physical unease. Hold the stick immediately over the area to be treated sufficiently low to enjoy a nice warmth but high enough to avert burning. DON’T LET THE MOXA STICK TOUCH THE SKIN. Place a dish to store any wayward ash.
5 Shift the moxa stick slowly above the area you want to treat for 5-7 minutes. You should experience soothing and warmth, but not very hot.
6 After you have completed the treatment, blow out the moxa stick by killing off any ash and then dipping the lit end into water.
