How to Grow a Pineapple

Pineapples are very tasty and lovelyl. They are also a wonderful plant that you can enjoy, observe, and plant for a long time. These are some tips to convert your purchased pineapple into a robust plant!

Steps

1. Buy a pineapple having firm, green leaves (avoid those with yellow or brown). The fruit skin has to be golden brown. Ensure it's not very ripe by lightly pulling on the leaves. If it comes away easily, the pineapple is very ripe for this purpose. Ensure it has no scale insects (they resemble tiny grayish dots) at the border of the leaves.

2. Remove off the crown and a part of the lower leaves thereby exposing the stem. Cut any fruit flesh such that the stem is not harmed (flesh can destroy the plant in future).

3. Shift it upside down and allow it to dry for nearly a week to allow the cut end and the leaf scars to set.

4. Keep the crown in a glass of water till the roots begin emerging. Replace the water after some days. Shield it from harsh temperatures.

5. Keep the crown in a 6” (15.2 cm) pot, containing light garden soil which is a 30% mixture of organic matter. Press the soil gently near the root of the crown such that there is no soil on the leaves.

6. The plant should be damp (not wet) in a sunny, warm and moist spot where the night temperatures won't go below 65ºF (18ºC). In dry conditions, mist the plant frequently.

7. Spray water the soil sparsely every week.

8. Fertilize the plant using a half-strength fertilizer two times a month in summer.

9. Watch out for flowers. It may take many years, but finally a red cone will show up, followed by blue flowers and ultimately a fruit. It requires nearly 6 months for the fruit to show up entirely.

Tips

· Help the plant to flower by putting the plant in a bag along with two very ripe apples chopped in half. The ethylene gas emitted by the apples can promote the flowering process.

· If this method doesn't work, use a small piece of calcium carbide in the middle of the plant or keep the plant next to it.

· In summer months, keep the plant outdoors in the sun. In winter, place the plant inside close to a sunny window.

· It is advisable to begin growing two pineapples, if one of them doesn't flower. This will give you a higher chance of bringing a pineapple plant to bear.

Warnings

· For enjoying full-size pineapples, ensure the plant grows about 6 feet across and feet tall. You should be open to accepting this size, to get giant pineapples.

· Be very cautious if

· Handle a wild pineapple very cautiously. The sap from raw pineapple plants has very strong enzymes that can irritate your skin. To get full-sized pineapples, the plant should be around six feet across and three feet tall.
