How to Relieve Calf Pain

Pain in the calf muscles occur at the most inappropriate times, when you are in between a game, during a long trek or a marathon or sometimes even while on your way to work. Pain in this region can occur due to various factors. The least severe is a cramp, or a muscle pull while more severe conditions are tendinitis, ruptured tendon, muscle tear or even Achilles tendon rupture. Other causes of calf pain can arise due to deformity in the foot such as flat foot or a high arch. Even improper footwear can cause calf pain. Most of these conditions need to be treated by a doctor, however, in case you have slight pain only, you can try some of these tips.

Prevention is better than cure. So check your footwear first of all. In case the sole is worn out, replace them. Also, make sure you buy good quality cross trainers which absorb most of the impact and provide good cushioning to your feet. In case you have a flat foot or a high arched foot, correcting it will make a difference. Arch supports help in the same.

If you have injured your calf, rest it initially for the first two days while applying ice over the calf for about twenty minutes once in two to three hours. Subsequent to which use an elastic bandage to compress the area and keep the leg elevated above heart level. After the swelling has reduced, apply any balm over the region. Cover it with a plastic sheet to keep the area warm and then tie an elastic bandage. Continue so long as you feel comfortable. You can also take Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs, NSAID in short, to reduce pain and inflammation but if the pain persists for more than a week, consult a doctor.

Use heel lifts, found at most of the sports shops, which reduce the strain on the calf by lifting the hells and shifting the weight to the toes. However, if the above tips don’t make much difference and you find yourself still limping in agony, consult a doctor immediately.
