How to Teach a Parrot to Talk

The most relaxing thing is to hear your parrot say ‘hello’ as soon as you come in from work. But there are many differences between the parrots, while some are excellent talkers, while others talk slowly. So start by selecting the suitable breed for you, but note, the smaller species of parrots are slow talkers and their speech can be quite hard to grasp.

Conures, parakeets (budgies) ringnecks, plumheads, cockatiels, alexandrine, lorikeets and lovebirds are weak talker and so don’t buy one of them if you want a bird with talking ability. But, if you have decided to purchase small ones then you have to spend some time at the bird shop to find out which one is regularly making noises.

Keeping your parrot at the correct place of the house is also helpful in its talking ability. As far as possible, place it in the kitchen as families usually gather together here, thus exposing the bird to many human activities and sounds. Begin teaching your parrot as it becomes 4 - 6 months old. The environment should be calm and should have plenty of foods as the bird loves such surroundings.

Usually, if the bird is problematic and unhappy then it would be reluctant to talk. Bring your mouth near its face to get its attention. Start with a common word like ‘hello’ and repeat it daily. Avoid comparing other pets to yours as parrots generally differ from one another. Some will learn words faster than the others. Be patient. Use reward system, offer some treats when it starts repeating the word.

Proper diet is very essential if you want the bird to learn quickly. Don’t give diet rich in sunflower or safflower seeds as research shows that bird on these diets are generally duller and not responsive to the environment since the seed diets are nutritionally empty. As far as possible feed bird pelleted diets.

Teach the parrot to talk by the method of linking the word with action and feeling; like when saying hello, try waving your hands along with it. African gray parrots have effectively learnt about 100 words in this fashion. Also, as parrots are more responsive to high-pitched female voices, it is advisable for women or children to teach. Ensure the length of each session is maximum of 15-20 minutes, since any longer periods will bore them. Use these tips to ensure your bird talks at the earliest. Remain firm and persistent. Avoid using tape recorders for teaching as mechanical systems don’t have human interface, thereby boring them.
