	How to Treat Acne with Tretinoin

Tretinoin is a compound of vitamin A, it is commonly called retin A. It is a type of retinoids. It is effective in treating acne vulgaris, the most usual type of acne.

Its working

Retin-A works by reducing the size of sebaceous glands thus lesseniing sebum secretion. Extra amount of sebum causes blocked pores, which results in acne breakouts as comdones.

There are other advantages too. Retin A is a very powerful skin exfoliant and helps in skin cell regeneration. By clearing dead skin cells, less sebum is secreted as fewer pores are blocked. It means less oil and bacteria are deposited on the upper layer of the skin too.

By clearing dead skin cells at the upper layer of the skin and exposing new skin, it reduces the signs of aging. It also minimizes the scarring due to the acne. In short, it cures both the cause of acne and results of the acne.

Types of tretinoin for acne treatment

Basically, there are two different kinds of acne treatments that use tretinoin as the main constituent. Retin A cream that has tretinoin and the retinoic acid (retin a).

Retin a cream

The retin a creams generally have strength of 5%. A popular cream for acne treatment having retin A is, Renova.

Retinoic acid

This also should be used only as per doctor's prescription. It is acid lotion with the prescription strength of 5%.

The results

Retin A (tretinoin) is one of the more powerful acne clearing treatments. After the 3-month period, there should be dramatic improvements to your look.

Unfortunately, acne worsens in many people immediately after beginning retin a treatment, but then yields excellent results. The user should be quite patient to see results.

Side effects

Adverse effects of retin A (tretinoin) in many cases are quite minor and do not stop people from using it. To avoid the irritating effects of tretinoin it is best to use it only at night.

Retin A makes parts of the skin where it has been applied highly sensitive to the sun and, direct exposure to the sun leads to minor burns and skin peeling. If you want to go out in the sun, apply a non-oily sun cream to prevent the skin from burning.

Warning: If you want to get pregnant or already are, don’t use retin-A. There is some sign that retin A can harm an unborn foetus or likelihood of birth defects.

This is mostly theoretical instead of proof, particularly isetretinoin (accutane), which is also a retinoid, though more potent with more power and is more systemic since it is taken orally, is forbidden for women intending to get pregnant.

Hence, don’t use retin A in this situation.

Little adverse effects of Retin A

These are few side effects of retin A that don’t have any harmful health problems or any systemic damage. So you can live with them.

    * Reddish skin – this occurs due to the strong acidic reaction with skin.

    * Peeling – as it's a potent exfoliant there is usually some restricted peeling of the skin.

    * Dry skin – Caused by the above factors.

There are few adverse effects that may lead to withdrawal:

    * Skin getting very red after usage. This usually motivates users to go for an alternative acne treatment.

Some people’s skin may be very sensitive to retin A, causing lot of skin irritation and burning sensations. Ask your doctor to prescribe something to lessen the irritation and calm the skin provided it is non-oily.
