How to become a CPA
CPA's (
Certified Public Accountants
) differ from other accountants in that they must possess specific state and licensing conditions like education, examination and experience. CPA's must also take Continuing Education courses to keep abreast of all features of CPA services. They must follow a rigid code of professional ethics and they are accepted and highly revered by the public. CPA's are rewarded for their additional effort by being paid a high five-figure and even six-figure salary. It depends mostly on experience.
The education necessary to
become a CPA
includes:
· An accounting program qualified as licensure-qualifying, or
· An accounting program recognized by an accrediting body recognized by the Department, or
· A program considered by the Department to be similar to a registered program, or
· 15 years of public accounting experience agreeable to the State Board for Public Accountancy
Next, decide from where you want to get license and apply to that province. This is common sense but if you have already appeared for the CPA exam, re-apply to the state board of accountancy of the area where you appeared for the exam.
Then get and read the Uniform CPA Candidate Bulletin. It is for those interested in appearing for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. It will tell you the location for applying, process of registering and appearing for the exam, and offer general information about examination procedures and material. This is an online document.
Now apply to appear for the exam. You can get an application or re-apply at these places:
· CPAES acts as an agent for many state boards. Visit them at www.nasba.org
· Washington state applicants should contact Castle Worldwide
· Those from other states should get in touch their state board of accountancy to know where they should apply
Next fill out forms and submit along with required fees. The process differs for first time applicants and those who are re-applying.
· First time candidates. These people must fill and send the application forms along with any other necessary documents. Rules differ amongst jurisdiction so ensure to meet your province’s conditions for fee payment.
· Reassessment candidates. These people should follow their provincial conditions.
Finally, fix a test appointment. After applying are found suitable, you will get a Notice to Schedule (NTS) for every exam section you might take. Each NTS is just for a short period of time, so better do it immediately in order to prevent missing any testing prospects.
