How to choose the right law school
If you want to become an attorney/lawyer then you must go to a law school after your law degree. The law school selected is one of the most vital decisions you will ever make as it can affect the degree of success in your career as a lawyer.
Begin researching potential law schools
Selecting a law school is very complicated since the admission procedure is very inflexible and more complex than most other fields. You have to begin preparation for selecting a law school much before application deadline. You can begin by searching on the net and studying the law schools of your choice and asking brochure and other pertinent information for potential students.
Admission to law school
Before attending a law school, you have to appear for a test administered by the Law School Admission Council called the LSAT (Law School Admission Test). Your performance in this test will mainly decide which law school you are eligible to go. Leading law schools ask for very high scores in your LSAT.
· You can attend a law school recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA). It will give you with much recognized law degree. But, ABA recognized law schools charge higher fees than non-recognized law schools.
· If you study at a non-recognized school, you must then pass you an examination before beginning your course.
There are many factors that will decide what law school to choose:
· Your law degree. The categorization of your grade of degree is most important in deciding which law school is best for you. To enter the best law schools, you should have obtained a good degree from one of the more reputed universities.
· Remember, unless you intend to work for some of the most revered law firms, you don’t necessarily have to go to the best law schools. Many lawyers have reached the top from small law firms to ultimately work for some of the largest law firms in the country without attending a fancy law school.
Area of law you intend to study
One deciding factor in selecting a law school is the area of law to atudy. Some law schools specialize more in some areas than others. Generally, though, the best law schools have programs of the highest quality in most areas of law.
Finance
· A course in a law school is very costly. The fees are very high generally resulting in heavy student loans for funding the law school.
· The fees at American Bar Association (ABA) recognized law schools are far higher than non-recognized law schools. But, over the period, the return on investment - in terms of a pay a lawyer gets – in attending an ABA recognized law school is usually worth the high fees.
Law school ratings
You can obtain law schools graded by some respected publications giving a good or fair idea of the best law schools, or at least, according to the prospective employers. These publications are available online or at a good bookstore.
Online law schools
There may be few online law schools that conduct courses to offer a solution for employed people to study law while working, but till date these law schools are not recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA).
