How to reduce Sebum
What is sebum?
Sebum is an oily compound comprising of fatty acids, cholesterol secreted by sebaceous glands because of hormonal activity. It also leads to body odor. Although sebum is necessary to protect the skin against pathogenic bacteria and provide the skin with a healthy glow, over production or extra sebum can be dangerous in many methods.
Sebum and acne
A fact is that overactive sebaceous glands cause lot of sebum causing blocking pores that ultimately form acne. Sebum moves to the skin surface through the hair follicles. There, the follicles merge with dead skin cells that clog pores leading to initial stages of acne.
Hair loss
Although hair loss in many men is because of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), there is strong proof that there is high instances of excess sebum in men showing hereditary hair loss.
Extra sebum along with dead skin cells can harm hair follicles as sebum penetrates the surface along the hair follicles. So it may not surprise you to know that many hair loss sufferers have oily scalp.
Sebum reduction tips
* A healthy diet with minimum consumption of fats
* Cleaning hair and body after strenuous exercise.
Nizoral effectively reduces sebum
Nizoral, an anti-dandruff shampoo contains ketoconazole as its chief component, which has shown to be very effective at lessening sebum production. This is in part due to Nizoral being an anti androgen. Androgen is a hormone that when overactive, raises sebum production to very high levels.
Use Nizoral about 2/3 times per week in the recommended quantity. Continuous usage of Nizoral helps users manage sebum production and lowers sebum to more normal levels.
Don’t use Nizoral excessively as it has some minor adverse effects like headaches and overuse may use dry looking hair, though a good hair conditioner can handle this issue.
Treatments like spironolactone lessen the function of androgens, leading to reduction of sebum.
