How to start a bakery
To begin a
bakery business
, as with any business, you must prepare a business plan. This plan should focus on:
· Things needed to begin (e.g. building, equipment, supplies, etc.)
· Amount you are ready to spend initially
· Amount of your monthly bills
· The products you intend to sell with written recipes
· Your company name and the products you will deal in (many companies have a corporate as well as a store name, for limited liability and fast growth)
· Setting up profit and loss certification /tax information
The general tips for running any bakery business are simple. Purchase supplies nearest to what you use. E.g.: a 25 tray oven is useless if your daily quantities are less than 10 trays. Here, an oven dealing with 15 or 20 trays is suitable, as it occupies less space than the 25 tray oven, but offers you room to grow.
There is ample advice about equipment and kinds of products, but the most important thing to run a successful bakery is customers.
Customers of a bakery are of two types: the take-away customer and the contract or bulk customer. For success, you should have both kinds. The takeaway customers are a source of daily cash and rapid sales, often below $10 per transaction. The bulk sales/contracts and daily deliveries will foot the expenses, but only every 15 or 30 days.
The bulk customer is crucial for monetary reasons. If you can fix on the amount earned by your contracts, you can work backwards, deciding the amount to assign for rent, equipment buy, lease, promotions, utilities, and wages.
Staff
Ensure you hire the number of people suitable to the business needs. A very busy bakery will need many staff members to handle a rush of customers and to ensure there is a right turnover of the products sold. On the contrary, a less busy bakery (one handling only locals) can manage with 2 or 3 employees. They are generally family run businesses.
Location
One most vital decision that should be pondered while preparing your business plan is the location. The location is of prime importance for having a successful bakery business. A bakery should be based in a busy area with other businesses and public transport.
Competition
You should remember this competition in this field is quite stiff as there are some famous national level bakeries that have stores all over. So it is crucial not to go compete with them. Instead concentrate on making your business unique. Mostly it is advisable to let it be a bakery with strong local
Rather, you should focus on making the business different in some way. Perhaps its best to remain associations.
