Internet Protocol Television – IPTV

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is television content which is transmitted to the user through the same technologies that provide information via computer networks, as well as the Internet which is different from regular broadcast and cable formats. The method includes transmitting and getting data through "packets" of information.

Though IPTV utilizes the same "packet" transfer method as the Internet, there is a major difference; IPTV is transmitted through separate, closed networks that are independent of the Internet. This offers higher speed, quality, and usability as against Internet TV, analog cable, or satellite TV. Unlike satellite or cable, the only IPTV channel transmitted to your television is the personal channel you choose from the program guide - leading in a lot faster and much better viewing experience.

It is because of this higher efficiency that helps IPTV to offer interactive features to its users. Few of these features can comprise interactive program guides, on-screen caller ID, and hard drive recording.

It is due to the superior quality of sound and images, interactive characters and higher reliability that IPTV is growing in popularity. From February 17, 2009, all U.S. television broadcasts will be completely digital as mandated by the Federal Communications Commission. It is to provide a degree  of uniformity of broadcasts between providers as technologies go on improving.

Moreover, many big telecommunication providers and equipment makers hope to speed up the consumption of IPTV services by supporting a host of interoperable technology specifications. Programs like the Open IPTV Forum are trying to develop open standards and set deployment specifications.

The aim of these programs is to ensure total compatibility and interoperability between services, providers, and equipment for the benefit of users, and to both enhance and continuously improve usability through a specific amount of standardization.

Internet protocol television also offers better quality and reliability than normal cable or satellite television providers. The picture and audio is far better than that of cable television, and IPTV does not have the same hardware restrictions of satellite TV.

IPTV offers superior quality and usability and is designated to cater to more than 20 million households by 2008. Once the federally authorized switch-over to digital broadcasts occurs in 2009, there is expected to rise further.
