Irritant contact dermatitis
is not the same as allergic contact dermatitis. In allergic contact dermatitis, a substance to which you are allergic leads to the inflammation. In irritant contact dermatitis, the substance inflames your skin and injures you, even before your skin could repair itself, thus leading to the dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis is usually restricted to the area of contact, unlike allergic contact dermatitis that can affect larger area. Most of the times, it is difficult to discriminate between both of them.
Some types of common irritant contact dermatitis hampering skin care are:
Housewives eczema caused by everyday contact with water, detergents and other household cleaning materials.
Dermatitis occurring below the rings worn on fingers due to deposition of the irritant like soap under the rings.
Cosmetics causing irritation.
Water can be one of the common irritants. Some people can suffer from dermatitis if they are exposed to water for a long time. Other common irritants include: solvents, salts, alkalis, acids, detergents, etc. These irritants counter the skin cells and kill them. They dissolve the skin oil, enter the skin and destroy it. In severe cases, the wound can be a big one. Many acids and alkalis can burn, so handle them carefully.
For proper skin care, if you know the irritant that results in dermatitis, avoid it. If you are suddenly exposed to strong irritants like acids or alkalis, wash the area with plenty of water and visit a doctor as soon as possible. This type of dermatitis is usually treated with topical antibiotics or steroids.
