Japanese Style Window Treatments
Modern decorating trends
focus more on globalization. As different cultures know more about each other, they also take in traditional and modern aspects of local interior design. Japanese influences were the first to be used in the multi-cultural design selection, and you can easily see why Japanese culture became known for clean lines and usage of natural textures, from bamboo to thin rice paper.
Bamboo wood blinds, also known as woven wood shades, are a genteel and easy method to begin. They are not only pleasing to the eye and simple to use, they also give high amounts of light control and privacy. Another commonly used for Japanese window treatments is tatami, a dense woven read with a warm, natural feel. Both these wood blinds can be dyed to match an interior color scheme. Depending on how much you want to take your theme further, you can also opt for sliding paper screen for your Japanese window treatments. They are wonderful solution for hiding abnormally sized plate glass picture windows. Also called as shoji screens, these sliding screens provide a good amount of light diffusion but without total blackout.
Though curtains are not originally Japanese, many designers go for Japan's traditional textile prints. These prints present on kimonos and other clothes comprise everything from geometric designs to decorative scenes of carp or eagles. These fabrics are normally used as short hanging curtains, and can also be worked into café curtains, which tend to ape the traditional hanging noren curtains present at the door of Japanese restaurants.
Another Japanese-kind window treatment are panel track blinds, or sliding panels. Though not originally Asian, panel tracks provide a ready-made décor. They are like large fabric vertical blinds and found in various colors, fabrics and feels. Panel tracks also work as a room separator, aping Japanese sliding paper panels.
Lastly, there are roman shades. Again though, not particularly Asian or Japanese, the correct fabric and texture selection will work with this type of decor. The best kind of roman shade for this use is the flat-style, instead of the hobbled or folded roman shades. Romans are available in bamboo weaves, grasses and wood planks that suit nicely with the Japanese style of decorating.
A word of warning – this type of decoration suits few homes. But there are homes where it did not match properly or were overdone. So if you want to use this type of style, go step by step and ensure there are no clashing decorative motifs.
