Lawn Watering Tips

A lot of people have no idea when they should water their lawn. However avoid waiting till it becomes brown. Insufficient watering causes severe stress to the lawn, making it vulnerable to insects and disease. So it is important you set up a schedule for periodic watering.

Water before the start of the day, even prior to sunrise. This allows the water to seep in instead of evaporating. Besides any extra water that is unabsorbed, can evaporate. Watering in the evening will let the water seep in but extra water will not evaporate, resulting in fungal damage.

Water deeply to allow deep root growth. Light watering causes roots to remain on the surface, due to presence on water there. . The shallow ground becomes dry quickly and hence the lawn should be watered frequently. The deeper soil retains water for a longer period and hence the lawn will be heavily affected in case of drought. Shallow roots can also cause thatch. At least 3-5 inches of the depth of the soil should be wet.

Prevent over-watering. Many people tend to over-water than under-water. They feel excess water is far better, which is a false notion. Aim to provide adequate water to prevent lawn from drying out. Excess water can rob the nutrients, encourage fungal spores and disease and causes stress to the lawn.

Most lawns need 1-2 inches of water every week. To save water or if the lawn is on a slope, watering for 5 minutes on and 15 minutes off is the suitable method. This should be done till the necessary quantity of water is given to the lawn. This allows the water to sink in and minimizes runoff.

Find out if you are giving the correct quantity of water by keeping a few cans on the lawn to catch the water. These cans should have straight sides to get correct measurement. The water can bounce off the edges of tall cans, so it is advisable to use short cans. Measure the water in the cans and multiply by the frequency with which you water each week. You will get the actual inches of water being fed each week. Each can should give nearly 1-2 inches each week, depending on temperature, shade and type of grass. Hot and sunny areas need more water. Do not forget to add any rain water while calculating.

In brief, watering in the morning, 2-4 times a week in short bouts but enough to allow the water to soak the ground, is the best method. Using a sprinkler system is the most efficient method of watering as it effectively covers the whole lawn. You can also program it to provide water as and when required.
