Marble cleaning tips

Since marble is porous, dirt can easily seep in and become permanently embedded. It has many grooves and cuts to accommodate unwanted filth. Marble's chemical composition is not very stable and it does not bear cleaning with detergents and acids. Acids react with Calcium carbonate in marble and lead to pits and scars. The most effective and safe method is to use lukewarm water and a safe, non-acidic detergent. Always wipe the area dry after cleaning and apply a thin layer of wax for long-lasting protection. Wax is usually used for wood cleaning but it can be of use here too.

Stains caused by spilling tea or coffee can be erased by using safe materials like blotting paper or tissue. The medium has to be soaked in a solution of 20% Hydrogen peroxide and then kept at the site of the stain for a long period of time. In due course, the stain can be wiped off. Rust removers are used to get rid of rust stains. However careful you might be with your marble fittings, over the years they will lose their sheen and color. Tin dioxide is another good preparation, which is like an elixir to maintain the quality of the marble. It is used as a polish or with a floor-polishing agent. Regular care and maintenance go a long way in preserving marble.
