Mosquito Prevention and Control
Mosquitoes
are one of the most important vectors or disease carriers in the current times. These insects have mouthparts, which can pierce the skin and suck blood, and simultaneously transmit infection, which is present in them to be manifested in the human body. Few of the diseases that are spread due to mosquito bites are malaria, dengue, elephantiasis, Rift Valley Fever, West Nile Virus infection etc. Many of these conditions are fatal if untreated. It is therefore essential that you must take sufficient steps in order to curb the growth and spread of mosquitoes, and subsequently, the spread of mosquito borne diseases.
Mosquitoes thrive in stagnant or standing undisturbed water. Since this is their breeding ground, it is essential that you should ensure that there are no such water sources around your house. If they are present, take sufficient steps to clear away the water. Check tires, pots and even bowls for the same. Drains for the rainwater may get clogged and lead to stasis of water. This should be avoided in all possible ways too. Since mosquitoes can also live in hedges or long grasses, regular trimming and mowing will keep them at bay. Mesh on the windows and keeping your doors closed especially in the evenings and nights will also help.
In case mosquitoes are already present, then use of substances so as to repel them is an ideal choice.
Citronella oil, Eucalyptus oil, Lemon balm and Lemon grass
etc are few naturally found substances that can repel mosquitoes from biting. Even any sound can keep them away and so can switching a fan about you.
But if a mosquito has already bit you, you can use Calamine lotion, Aloe Vera, Water vapor etc to soothe the irritation. Scratching one’s skin over the rash can cause break in the continuity, making it susceptible to acquire infections as well. Finally, it is better to be safe than sorry, so ensure that you do not fall prey to mosquitoes.
