Organic Lawn Care

It is no surprise that popularity of organic methods to care for your lawn is increasing by the day. But don’t be misled, at any point you have to put a lot of time and money into your lawn just to achieve a green hue.

Organic methods work on the principle of enriching the soil thereby indirectly enhancing the growth of grass or any other plant. A nutrient rich soil has higher water content, which provides a congenial environment for insects, which improve the nutrition of the soil and also keep infection at bay by organisms, which live in symbiosis with the plants.

To begin with, take the help of someone who is a professional to determine the composition of your lawn’s soil. After that, you can proceed accordingly planning the amount of nutrients that are needed to replenish the deficiency. Different seeds respond to different type of soils so choose wisely.

An effective way to cut down on your fertilizer requirements is by mowing the grass so that only 2 – 3 inches of grass remains and the chopped remains decompose there itself and provide nitrogen to the soil. Aeration of the soil should be done without fail at least once a year. This helps in circulating fresh air in between the soil and the dense growth of grass. Aerate the lawn in springtime preferably, so that the frost and snow is removed from the topsoil too.

Another bit of advice is to water your lawn during summer in such a way so that the soil is adequately watered. However, the water must not stagnate on the top. This ways, the roots invade deep to reach the water and thus create a good hold on the soil and compete better with unwanted weeds for the nutrition.

Keep these pointers in mind and you can be assured that not only are you taking good care of your lawn but also you are doing your bit in keeping the environment as natural as possible.
