Organic Weed Control

Weed is an unavoidable factor, which every gardener has to face whatever he may do. However, there are ways to counter the growing weed and prevent its excess spread. These methods coupled with regular monitoring can help in reducing the growth of weed by a big margin.

A pitchfork is an effective tool in removing weed. The fork is thrust under the weeds and removed with the weed plant intact. The excess soil is removed by shaking the fork and the weed is used for preparing manure purposes. However, this can be used in only those areas where no other plants are growing, as there is a chance of uprooting the required plants as well.

A stirrup hoe can be used in areas where the plants like vegetables are grown in a line. It has a hoop in the shape of a square or circle. The hoe cuts the seedlings and can also uproot them. This helps in ensuring that the weeds do not emerge again. But in places where the weeds are growing quite close to the main plants, you need to remove them by hand as there is a chance of damage by the hoe.

Mulch is also effective in reducing weed growth. It works by preventing the sunlight from reaching the soil thus inhibiting any growth of weeds. Clippings of grass, branches, hay and other degradable substances like leaves and barks can be used.

In spite of so many procedures to reduce the weed growth, hand picking is by far the most preferred method of removing weed. The only point that must be kept in mind is to monitor the area regularly and uproot any weed before it flowers thus preventing it from spreading its seeds. Always check if the roots are present while removing the weed to ensure complete plant has been uprooted or else they will grow back again. One sure shot way of avoiding weed to grow through the cemented parts of the house is to pour boiling water over that area. Even vinegar can do the job. Refrain from pouring this near other plants as it may kill them as well.
