You may have come across many credit card companies advertising their platinum credit card and wondered what it means. This card is normally offered to people who keep their accounts in good standing. However each company issuing cards adopts different standards and features for their platinum cards.

Start by remembering that many finance companies providing credit cards have various types of products. Each of them lets you buy on credit, but their features differ, with each card having its unique, distinct features. One can charge a lower interest rate, but compensate it by charging a yearly membership fee. Another can charge a slightly higher interest rate but there is no fee and you get discounts on purchases made at specific merchants.

Most of these companies give a platinum credit card that has many useful features for their select customers. Each company's platinum credit card differs. Actually, many companies provide more than one type of platinum card. Its general characteristics are: higher spending limit, low interest rates and special features meant to attract regular users. These features can consist of cash back, special rewards, membership of discounts clubs or auto clubs and at times, special rates on automobile or life insurance. But they do charge an annual membership fee that you must pay so as to keep your card active. This can make them less attractive than other lower grade cards.

To summarize, though you need flawless credit to get these cards, don’t just think that a platinum credit card is the best card, right for you. Select the card based on your reason for taking credit and your particular situation. Consider even the normal credit cards. E.g. if your have an outstanding balance on other card, it is better to choose a card that offers a balance transfer with 0% interest rates. If you are constantly on the move, a card offering a discount on petrol prices is the best one for you. You may also select one that supports your preferred charity.
