Profitable Candle Making Tips
If
candle-making
is your hobby, and your candles are highly appreciated by your friends and family and others who have seen them, then you may be tempted to take up this hobby as a business.
Use these 5 tips prior to starting your own candle-making business:
1.
Cost computation
: Before finalizing the selling price of each candle, first thing is to try and calculate the cost you will incur per candle. To manufacture many candles at a time, buy the raw materials in bulk. To compute the cost of one candle, first calculate the cost per ounce of each of the ingredients. E.g. you may have used paraffin wax, acid, color, perfume etc. to make the candles. Find out the cost per ounce of each item and the number of ounces used in each candle. This will give you the total cost of making each candle. If you have included accessories like ribbons, bows, natural accents or boxes, ensure you take into account their costs as well. Also add the cost of the wick too. Now that you have calculated the cost of one candle, keep your selling price about 3-4 times this cost. And if want to sell the candles in bulk, the selling cost should be twice the production cost.
2.
Purchase your raw materials in bulk
: Purchasing the ingredients in bulk is always recommended and profitable. Talk to your supplier about higher discounts. Most manufacturers give good discounts on purchases exceeding 200 pounds. For fragrances, if you use many of them, try to restrict your choices till your business becomes more stable. Increasing your product line will lower your prospects of earning profits.
3.
Selling your candles
: One of the excellent methods of earning profits from your candle business is to make them easily available in preferred shopping areas. The best place to begin is your local store. Find a store in your area that sells candles and meet the Stores Manager. In your first meeting be polite and courteous, because some people get turned off by strong sales pitches. Remain soft but firm. If you cannot get to meet the concerned Stores personnel the first time, try again. Give them sufficient time to ponder over your stocks. Give them samples, brochures and business card. Revert to them at a later date to ask if they have had time to go through your products. If you find a Store that that is interested in your products, give them some free samples that they can keep burning at the front counter. It is a great method of carrying out some market research. If the customers show their interest in these candles, it is quite likely the store will stock your candles.
4.
Concentrate on a trendy ‘theme.’
: Today everyone wants exclusivity. Design your candles with a special theme that is not available elsewhere. If ‘nature’ is a theme that is in vogue in your area, use this theme to create candles. Hence you will create a separate and exclusive brand. The natural candles utilize natural constituents such as leaves, twigs, dried fruits and flowers and are well appreciated by the people. Spend time to determine the preferences of people in your area and design candles based on it.
5.
Do not ignore the power of smell
: Many candle manufacturers make long-lasting candles, but wrap them in such a packaging that is impossible for buyers to smell them prior to buying them. Don’t forget, most people would prefer to smell a perfumed candle, before purchasing it. If you make candles with a characteristic aroma, ensure customers can smell it prior to purchase, since it is your USP. Otherwise all your efforts will be down the drain.
