Questions To Ask When Buying A Horse
These are the things to find out from the owner:
· If the horse is right suitable for a beginner. Many will honestly answer this question as they don’t want to harm others.
· Age, height and build of the horse. Does it fit your criteria?
· Color and markings, if you think they are important.
· Type of temperament he/she has. Quiet, calm, bombproof, gentle.
· For a mare, what to expect when any mood swings occur.
· Suitability for your selected horse activity. This is just an opinion and should not be taken seriously, unless there is a very good reason for it. e.g. if you need a horse for jumping but this one always refuses.
· Vices or bad habits if any, Charging, biting, kicking, bolting, bucking, rearing. If any of these are present, you can walk off.
· Easy to catch and shoe and trailer and worm. A horse that refuses to perform these is a problem, so think carefully if you have to adjust to these bad habits.
· Phobias if any, like dogs, bicycles, cars. They aren't good too.
· Health problem. So you can think about it if it can create issues for you.
· Any soundness problems or physical disabilities. These will turn up in a vet examination, but there is no reason to go for a handicapped horse.
· Training and uses received by the horse from the current and former owners. Did the horse undergo what you want to do? You'll enjoy ore with a horse from which you can learn instead of on the contrary.
· Duration in which the horse has worked (ridden frequently) and if it has worked lately. Some horses are trained quite late in life. Others are trained and worked and then left in a paddock for a long time.
· Personality quirks, if any.
· The real reason for selling. Though you might not get an honest answer, it is better to ask it.
