Roofing Shingles For Your Home
When constructing a home or altering the roof of your current home you should know all your options.
Roofing shingles
are most widely used on roofs, for many reasons. They are quite cost-effective, depending on the kind of shingle used. Most shingles can withstand fire and easily installed.
Another reason is shingles survive for at least 15 years. There are 3 different kinds of shingles we cover here. We also cover price ranges, the lifespan, durability and pros and cons of each type.
The most widely used shingle on roofs is the asphalt. It's also the cheapest, costing about $15 to $25 per square. They can also be easily installed. Asphalt shingles are lightweight and available in various styles and colors. They can resist fire and last up to 30 years if looked after properly.
Though asphalt shingles are widely used, they do have few disadvantages. They can be badly damaged in high winds like hurricane force winds or tornadoes. Those made with asphalt can also be affected by mold unless specially treated. Compared to others, asphalt shingles are not durable.
Slate (or stone) shingles are gaining rapid popularity. They give a natural feel and depth to any home. Slate shingles are available in various colors and styles. With these shingles, you can design a unique look to your home. A major advantage of these is their durability and can last over 100 years.
The slate shingles do have some drawbacks too. They are very heavy and the rafters of the home may have to be reinforced to prevent the roof from collapsing. They must also be installed by professionals and are fragile. Stone shingles are also very costly, costing around $850 per 100 square feet.
Wood shingles, popularly called as shakes, are made from different kinds of treated wood. The most commonly used wood in preparing wood shakes is cedar but they can also use pine and spruce. Wood shakes can be easily to installed and look beautiful with any home. They can also be easily repaired as against other kinds. If tended properly, wood shakes can last for at least 50 years.
Wood shakes have some disadvantages that can out-weigh the advantages at times. They are not fire proof. And in lots of places, this alone is enough to increase your insurance rates. They are more expensive, but not as expensive as slate shingles. They cost about $250 per 100 square feet. If not maintained properly, wood shakes start rotting and splintering besides molding and mildewing.
Obviously, there are various choices when selecting the kind of roof you want. Most people prefer asphalt due to the price, but if you can afford it, the best option is to go for slate roofing shingles. If you do not have any experience in roofing, hire someone who is. This will prevent you from having to hire somebody to tackle problems later on.
