Running in Winter

Many of us have a strict policy when it comes to exercising. The routine must be followed, come hail or high water. Cold winds and ice is no exception to this rule either. For such people, it can get a little monotonous if working on the treadmill for hours together. So here are a few tips you must follow in case you decide to get out and run irrespective of what the weather has in store for you.

First and foremost, ensure that your body is warmed up sufficiently. In a cold weather, you need to increase your running intensity more gradually so that your body is warmed up sufficiently. Or else, be prepared to suffer from muscle spasms.

Your running gear must be suited to the weather or else it could work against you. Cotton is a definite no. Instead, polypropylene clothing is a better option as it’ll ward off the cold. Also, the footwear that you choose will make a difference. For a better grip on the surface, trail shoes are a better buy than regular trainers.

Incase you need to run at faster speeds, then its better to do the same on a track and not elsewhere. Find out a school or any other track nearby where you can fulfill your requirements. But ensure that the track is adequately maintained as in winters, even the maintenance can slacken due to near zero usage of tracks.

It needn’t be mandatory to run even in winters. You can have a go at some winter sports, which are physically challenging and fun too. Skiing is one such option. And to add to it, you can deviate from your usual routine thereby keeping your body on its toes to adapt to different situations. Try other activities too, which will help you stay physically fit.
