	SONY – A Name You Can Trust

Be it audio or video, a name that strikes in one’s mind, almost instantly, is none other than Sony. And it is for a reason too. Sony has been around for over 50 years and it has not ‘just survived’ in the market but has been the leader in electronic equipments. Sony was initially known as Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Corporation, back in 1946, but the name was changed to Sony in 1958.

Sony is derived from multiple words. From Latin, which means sound; sunny in English and in Japanese, from Sonny Boys which translates as nerds in English. In the year 1950, Sony brought out an audio tape recorder, the first substantial consumer related product. Henceforth, it brought forth new technology in the form of a transistor radio in 1957, which one would carry in their trousers, to Walkman in 1979, a portable form of tape player, to a video game console, Playstation in 1994.

In the field of video recording equipments, Sony launched Betacam in the year 1982 which was used for recording professionally. Betamovie was targeted at the domestic front in 1983. However, these camcorders were quite bulky in size and thus needed to be placed on the shoulders during recording.

Over the period of time, however, technology became more compact and currently Sony has multiple forms of Handycams which utilize various forms of memory devices for recording purpose. These include hard disks, DVDs, mini DVDs, high definition camcorders etc. Indeed, Sony has come a long way from where they started. But since then, they surely have been consistent in keeping their standard of workmanship higher than their competitors.
