Sitali - Tongue hissing

Sitali is a yogic breathing method, implying cool breath. It reduces the fire energy principle known as pitta, responsible for catabolic methods in the body. It is derived from the dog, happily playing in the lawn, with its tongue hanging out.

When a puppy is playing happily, its body temperature rises and its tongue comes out and panting begins. It is nature’s cooling system. As a result, the saliva increases. The inside air grabs more moisture from the atmosphere, which then becomes cooler as it goes through the mouth. So the blood gets colder before arriving at the brain.

Sitali for students

Some Yoga students use Sitali along with drinking ample water at room temperature while working outdoors in summer. This is better than doing heavy physical activity along with plenty of iced tea, which worsens these results. But following a Yogic approach, you cool down, increase energy levels and raring to go again.

Many Yoga students limit hot flashes by using this method. Workers who learnt this kind of breathing have seen a rise in energy, in fast-paced factory environment as it allows them to regain their poise as and when required. Sitali cools the body's core temperature within about 5 minutes. It also cools your mind as it triggers the parasympathetic nervous system essential for peace and relaxation.

Modern Western culture, provides comforts that usually cause more discomforts. Shifting from a steamy and hot location into a very dry and cold location can be very distressing for our systems. When cooled, the body shivers as it attempts to reheat. It can even try to protect itself by producing more mucus. With stress, digestion slows down, breathing turns shallow and forced and the chemical balance within our body shifts. So we lose all the sense of peace and serenity. This is where Sitali is useful for modern living.
