Skin Allergies

A skin allergy is a reaction resulting from the contact of the skin with a substance, and hence the name skin allergy. Some varieties of contact skin allergies are dermatitis, eczema and hives.

Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin touches a substance a person is allergic to. A reaction to skin allergies can lead to redness or even swelling, stinging, burning or blisters and itching.

Some products responsible for skin allergies are: metals like nickel present in jewelry. The fragrances in perfumes are also responsible for skin allergies. Hair dyes and permanent solutions, latex, bath powders and tape are some other products responsible for skin allergies. Besides some toxic plants like poison ivy can cause irritating skin allergies.

Latex is one substance commonly causing skin allergies. It is found in various products like balloons, bathing suits, underwear, elastic bands and rubber toys. Reactions to latex can lead to contact dermatitis, and asthma or anaphylactic shock. These skin allergies can be serious, so if you are allergic to latex, it is better to inform your doctor and dentist before they start the treatment

Dermatitis or inflammation of the skin is generally known as eczema. This type of skin allergy leads to the sensation of dry and itchy skin. It can flake, scale or look irritated and red. Skin allergies like eczema usually start in childhood. Mostly it worsens in the winter when the air is dry.

There is no permanent treatment for skin allergies and their reactions. The best solution to prevent suffering from skin allergies is to stay away from the causes. For dermatitis and eczema, applying a good moisturizing lotion is the best prevention. If these skin allergies and contact dermatitis, eczema or hives occur, take common over the counter antihistamines like Benadryl or cortisone.

If you suffer from skin allergies, do not scratch so as to avoid infection.
