Suets for Birds
Those who are in the habit of
feeding wild birds
may probably already know what suet is, but for others, suet is nothing but animal fat. To make it more attractive for the birds, the suet generally contains seeds, fruits and even dried up insects! But before you give up on reading further, here’s a ray of hope. Suets can be obtained from stores, which generally keep other related stuff like feeders and garden supplies. Even your local butcher can help you with that.
However, if you are one of those who’d rather do this by themselves, here’s how you prepare suet. To begin with, make a trip to the butcher’s to get raw beef fat. This must be melted first and subsequently cooled. To set it in a shape, it’d be better to buy moulds so that you can make blocks of them. However, you can also just make one huge block and later on cut it to your choice of sizes. Make sure you freeze the left over suet or else you may repent later.
For those who feel that the suet they buy from the stores is not edible enough for the birds, they can enhance the taste by just heating it sufficiently so that it becomes relatively soft and then a mixture of dried fruits or seeds or even insects can be added to this and refrigerated. To hold the suet, there are particular types of baskets, which are generally available in the local garden supply store itself. These baskets are made of wires and are used to stop other animals such as squirrels from eating up the suet.
However, if the problem of squirrels is not solved in spite of these suet holders, it is better to place a few more of suet blocks in other areas so as to distract these animals from disturbing the main bird feeder.
