Sunburn Prevention and Treatment

When the skin is exposed to UV rays emanating from the sun, sun lamps and other strong light sources, causes inflammation. This inflammation is called sunburn. It should be treated immediately, failing which it can cause skin cancer.

The common signs and symptoms of sunburn are:
· Swollen, painful, reddened skin covered with blisters.
· Fever
· Nausea and vomiting
· Tanning or peeling of skin

If you are fair, have red or blonde hair, come in close contact with heavy lighting like welding arcs and take medications that makes your skin more sensitive to the UV light, you face a higher risk.

Sunburn causes changes in the structure of the skin. This can cause premature wrinkling, loss of the elasticity of the skin and major problems like keratosis, premalignant skin lesions, skin cancer, and malignant melanoma.

Prevention of sunburn:
· Do not go out in the sun between 12:00 and 3:00 pm.
· Cover yourself with sunblock, whose SPF is more than 15. Apply again after swimming or sweating. However, do not use baby oil, mineral oil, and cocoa butter because they cannot protect you due to their inability to filter out the UV rays.
· Reapply zinc oxide ointment regularly because it offers the highest protection.
· Avoid wearing bright colors or white due their reflective nature, which can cause burn.
· Gradually increase your sun exposure if you want a tan.

Treatment:
· Apply cool moist compresses on the damaged area to lessen heat and pain.
· Apply cold cream or baby lotion to moisturize the skin.
· Cover any blisters that can occur.
· Enjoy a bath containing oatmeal or baking soda to calm the skin. Do not rub the skin but simply pat dry.
· Take painkillers like aspirin or Tylenol to ease pain and reduce fever.
· Take care while using topical pain reducing sprays as they have caused allergies in some users.
