Swimming in shark infested waters

Though it sounds crazy, innumerable people throughout the world are actually doing it. Shark diving is becoming more and more popular throughout the world as tourists and scuba divers encounter their fears to jump into the water to face one of the most feared animals on earth. Whether being kept safely in the cage or in the open water, shark diving has become a major tourist adventure in shark infested waters of South Africa, Australia, The Gulf of Mexico and California.

South Africa is the major tourist destination for shark diving eco tourism. It is the best place for viewing the Great White Shark that has a reputation of being a man eater. It is the most feared killer on earth. It has been fueled by various shark movies. There are innumerable areas in South Africa that are great for shark diving and nearly all the operators conduct tours to these places. You can see Great White Sharks measuring up to 6m in length from inside the safety of a solid steel cage.

The dive operators take you to places between 2-15 kilometers offshore and throw dead fish and blood in the water to entice any sharks in the area. Once the sharks come into view, the cage is dropped and some false seal lures are tied above the boat to bring the sharks even closer. You can anticipate spending between 20-40 minutes in the cage. Sharks are usually curious about the cage, so they normally come closer to the cage.

If you are not happy about diving with sharks from the safety of a cage, then you can dive in the open water with various species of sharks. There are many places where you can do it. Most sharks will not harm humans unless they are threatened or they think they will be killed. Hence scuba diving with sharks is comparatively safe.

Some of the best places to dive in the open water with sharks are in The Caribbean, Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, CoCos islands, Mexico, The Maldives and The Bahamas. There are about dozens of species of shark you can see. The varieties of sharks you can expect to see depends on the time of the year you visit.

One of the most memorable experiences you will have is diving with a Whale Shark. This shark is the largest fish in the world, measuring up to 46+ feet. But don’t be scared. The Whale shark is an herbivore, it does not eat meat. In fact, it is the most gentle of all sharks and can handle some amount of human interaction. Whale sharks can be seen in the warm waters near the equator, but they are difficult to locate and you have to go quite a distance offshore to locate one.

So do not be scared by the thought of shark diving. It will make a great summer holiday for you.
