Tai Chi for Teenagers

Teenage years are the most difficult years of a person’s life. It can lead to anxiety, confusion, depression and low self-esteem. Mood swings occur frequently due to the hormonal changes occurring in the teen years. Practicing Tai Chi regularly allows us to understand that we are in control of how we opt to react to the events occurring around us. The truths evident in the symbolism of the movements allow us to see the world is and the manner in which it will unfold for us. We also feel more confident and raise our ideas of self-worth.

A study reports, Tai Chi players had less tension, depression, anger, tiredness, confusion and anxiety; they felt more energetic and, overall, had fewer mood disturbances. Ideal  for teenagers!

Tai Chi blends the mind, body, and spirit:

MIND--The motions of Tai Chi allows the left and right brain hemispheres to join or clearer thinking. Regular Tai Chi practice enhances mental concentration and focus. It takes the brain into a very calm, clear state called as the alpha state.

This mental state is very creative and productive. Just by doing some easy Qigong movements before school or before a test, job interview or class presentation, we can open the body's energies and allow them to flow in a manner highly conducive to learning. It also helps students with ADD/ADHD.

BODY--Regarding the physical benefits, Tai Chi allows blending the skeletal and muscular systems. As the players go through the slow-motion movements, their minds calm down, their breathing deepens and slows and their muscles relax. During this time the muscles are toning, making it a very effective workout.

It is also improves balance, flexibility and coordination. Moreover, Tai Chi improves the immune system, boosts the body's natural healing powers, hikes breathing capacity, lowers asthma and allergy reactions, relieves stress, hikes energy level and lubricates the joints.

Tai Chi is an excellent addition to any sports program. It has found uses in drug-abuse prevention programs, and it reduces aggressive behavior. Moreover, as low self-worth is responsible for most eating disorders, Tai Chi's capacity to increase confidence levels and synchronize mind and body can help anorexia and bulimia.

SPIRIT--Tai Chi frees the communication between mind and body. By its practice you learn to take it easy. You begin to trust your instincts and your own intuitive sense. The symbolism of Tai Chi and Qigong educates us "in with the good, out with the bad." You take in a deep breath in which you take in fresh cleansing energy (chi)-then, while exhaling you visualize throwing away anything negative: doubts, fears, judgments.

E.g., one movement says "Yield and be strong." It tells us to be still and hear our inner voice-which is the source of our strength. Another one is "Transitions can flow smoothly," telling us that similar to the physical changes of the movements, the changes in our lives should not scare us or difficult if we are fixed and grounded.

In the teenage years, we go through many changes. The smoothness of the movements reflects how we can encounter changes in our lives. It tells the importance of having a balance of strength and grace in our lives. These lessons will surely benefit youth all through their lives.
